He fell for the house – and he felt for it as it perched on the brink of its own extinction.“There aren’t many big old homes like that old mansion left – they’ve all been knocked down … When I first bought it, I was contacted by a hotel group that wanted to knock it down and put a hotel on it. It didn’t have long life left in it,” Schreiber recalled.
“It was in need of extensive repair. I pretty much knew all the plaster had to come out, and there was termite damage. All that came out in the inspections.
“All I ever cared about was whether the structure was solid – and man, that house is solid built,” he said.
A native of Spring, Schreiber has pretty much retired from companies he has since sold, including reception halls, nurseries, construction and stone yards. And perhaps all of that has prepared him for restoring the Potter mansion.
Between the basement, the main level and the upstairs, the place has as many as 20 bedrooms and seven baths.
