ROYALS NOTEBOOK DeJesus' injury creates roster opening for Gordon

NEW YORK | This isn’t the way Alex Gordon wanted to return to the Royals — an error on his first defensive chance as a major-league outfielder.

Gordon’s bobble in right field allowed speedy Brett Gardner to reach third base on a leadoff double in first inning of Friday’s game at Yankee Stadium.

That error was part of a four-run first inning the Royals would just as soon forget.

“He had it in his glove and just dropped it,” manager Ned Yost said. “That happens. That didn’t bother me. He made another nice play coming in on the ball and had three really good at-bats. He didn’t get any hits, but he sure had some good at-bats.”

Let’s push the error and the zero-for-four at the plate aside for the moment because everything suggests Gordon earned his recall Friday to the big leagues when the Royals needed an outfielder following an injury to David DeJesus.

Gordon, 26, batted .315 in 68 games at Class AAA Omaha with 14 homers, 44 RBIs and a 1.019 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage). He also showed notable progress in making the switch from third base to outfield.

“It was fun,” he insisted. “It was a new challenge for me. Obviously, leaving third was kind of hard because it was a position I’ve played all of my life. But we just thought moving to the outfield was best for me at this stage of my career.

“So far, I think it’s worked out very well.”

The injury to DeJesus, who will miss the rest of the season because of a torn thumb ligament, created the opening necessary for Gordon to get regular duty again.

“It’s not the way we wanted to get Alex Gordon up here,” Yost said, “but we wanted to get Alex Gordon up here. He’s been swinging the bat really well, and he’s been playing well in the outfield.”

O’Sullivan in, Lerew out

Right-hander Sean O’Sullivan not only took Anthony Lerew’s spot in the rotation after arriving in a trade with the Angels, but he also took Lerew’s spot on the roster.

The Royals cleared space for O’Sullivan before Friday’s game by designating Lerew for assignment. Yost also confirmed O’Sullivan will start Sunday against the Yankees in the series finale.

O’Sullivan beat the Yankees last Tuesday in New York after replacing injured Scott Kazmir in the Angels’ rotation.

The Royals acquired O’Sullivan and minor-league pitcher Will Smith on Thursday from the Angels for third baseman Alberto Callaspo.

“I didn’t even know (my name) was in talks,” O’Sullivan said. “It was a bit of shock. They called me in and said they needed to make a move, and I thought I was going back down. Then they said, ‘You’re going to KC,’ and I thought, ‘All right.’ ”

“There, I was just filling in for Kazmir. Here, I’ll get an opportunity to pitch on a regular schedule. I’d much rather be in a place where you get regular work.”

Lerew was 1-4 with an 8.54 ERA in six starts after being summoned June 16 from Omaha to replace injured Luke Hochevar.

Designating a player for assignment provides a team with a 10-day window to trade, release or send the player through waivers. The player remains in limbo until a move is determined.

Etc.

•The Royals have won just five of their last 32 games in the Bronx.

•The Royals scored fewer than two runs for the 17th time in the 96 games.

•Brian Bannister lost his fourth straight decision and for the sixth time in his last eight decisions.

•Wilson Betemit is four for eight with a walk in two games since becoming the starting third baseman.

Quick review of my stay w/my wife @ the Royalton in September 2009: Overall had a very positive stay and give high marks to the staff all the way around. In terms of the hotel itself, the lobby is more a high drama nightclub than what you think of as a hotel lobby; this is definitely a hotel geared for an adult stay, which worked perfectly for our weekend getaway without the kids. Loved the room, nice bed & shower, although it had a recessed bed that went into the wall a bit & I got up once and bonked my head on the wall.

If I had one complaint about the hotel, it would be that it was a bit too dark. As I said, the hotel lobby was like a club, which was fine at night but could’ve stood a little more light at 9AM. Within the room, the bathroom lighting was also not sufficient for my tastes — I kept trying to push the dimmer up a little higher, even tho I’d hit the maximum. The elevators in the hotel were also comically small — nothing bad, just sort of funny, but again a hint that this is not a family hotel but more for adult couples.

Great location near Times Square and within easy walking distant of plenty of desirable stuff (or the subway). We saw some other high drama couples during our stay that may have been somewhat famous, although we didn’t actually recognize any of them as being so, might’ve been our own obliviousness, though.
