The Pilobolus Dance Theater — named after a spore-scattering fungus — has and continues to thrill fans with its signature mix of butt-naked acrobatics and dream imagery.
But the troupe needs to dream up something new to remain vital.
In residence at the Joyce Theater in New York City through Aug. 7, the troupe is offering pieces in the company’s trademark style — like “Gnomen” and “Symbiosis” — that seem as wonderful as ever, leveraging the body in fantastic partnerships.
More recent efforts, like the darkly theatrical “Rushes” are passable. The dancers perform heroically.
After nearly 40 years, however, Pilobolus is showing signs of age by recycling ideas. This season, the slapstick wedding duet “Hitched” recalls a succession of similar pieces — including “Memento Mori” (2006), “Wedlock” (2003), “Bedtime Stories” (1993) and possibly even “Tarleton’s Resurrection” (1981) — returning to the cocktail of love and hostility that makes a comedy of neurotic relationships.
